Synthetic grass padel courts: advantages and types

| AmaranthIdea |

La coat choice for padel court It's never a given. Like the equipment, the type of padel mat also plays an important role in shaping the gaming experience.

The FIT (Italian Tennis Federation) padel regulations, with rule D, are clear:

"The surface of the court may be made of porous conglomerate or concrete, synthetic material or artificial grass, provided that the material allows the ball to bounce regularly and avoids the accumulation of water."

A suitable padel mat not only affects the aesthetic aspect, but also allows the athlete to guarantee extraordinary performance, while respecting safety.

So let's see between What types of synthetic grass padel courts are available? you can choose, the peculiarities, advantages and how to carry out correct maintenance.

Padel court mats: different types and characteristics

The synthetic grass surface of the padel court is made with different textures depending on specific needs.

Here are the most common types of padel mat textures:

  • monofilament: It's the most commonly used surface for high-level tournaments. The fibers of this mat can withstand significant pressure and are more durable because they don't undergo any additional manufacturing processes.
  • Textured: It is the carpet used during the World Padel Tour, it is thinner than the other types and requires a smaller amount of sand, while maintaining high shock absorbency. It is the most expensive turf on the market, but being subjected to greater stress, it wears out quickly. Among its advantages: it improves pitch stability and optimizes the turf's dimensional memory.
  • Fibrillated: It consists of one broad fiber divided into filaments during the extrusion process (a process that allows obtaining plastic pieces with a constant cross-section). This coat has the defect of being less resistant and having less resistance.

The colors of synthetic grass padel courts

In addition to the classic green, which resembles the color of natural grass, padel mats are also available in other colors.

AmarantoIdea offers padel mats, depending on the different fields, in the following colors:

  • Red;
  • green;
  • viola;
  • black.

According to the FIT regulation:

“The surface color should preferably be green, light blue, or terracotta, or variations thereof, single and uniform across the entire surface, clearly different from the color of the walls.”

Black, on the other hand, is reserved exclusively for the covered facilities, always according to the official rules. Obviously, no one is stopping you from laying out the turf in any color you like, as long as the pitch is not used for official competitions.

Synthetic grass padel courts: the advantages

Synthetic padel turf helps maintain the court's well-kept appearance and ensures quality and safety: it's the calling card of every club.

The advantages that synthetic grass carpet offers are:

  • ball bounce speed;
  • compactness;
  • low maintenance.

In addition to the maintenance factor, which in this case gives an advantage in terms of organization and time, this type of soil resistant to atmospheric agents and therefore allows play in all seasons.

Finally, we remind you that, in order for the carpet to remain in the best conditions over time, it is important to have a screed suitable for the padel court.

Silica sand on padel mats: what's it for?

What is the silica sand? It's easy to say! Sand increases the friction between the player's shoes and the ground, thus affecting two aspects:

  • avoid injuries and the possibility of crashing into other surfaces on the pitch;
  • improves ball rebound control: in fact, if well distributed, sand plays a key role in the ball's bounce on the mat and in its contact with the ground.

The purpose of silica sand on padel courts is to cover all areas of the floor. A minimum amount of court maintenance is therefore still necessary to prevent sand from settling in certain areas, leaving other important areas exposed (for example, under the net or in the service area).

Maintenance of the padel court carpet

As we mentioned, even if it's a quick field maintenance  While this is one of the advantages of synthetic grass, it's essential to take care of it: maintaining your turf is essential to keep playing paddle tennis in top condition.

Let's see what the key steps are to keep a synthetic grass padel court always in perfect condition:

  • the cleaning This is a step that must be done daily. Dirt (leaves, weeds, etc.) can enter the field, carried by the wind or inadvertently by players, which facilitates the growth of fungi on the turf. In this case, use a rake or rubber to remove any debris that is "polluting" the turf. A blower can be used to facilitate this process, but be careful not to blow the sand away.
  • The redistribution of sand It should be repeated weekly. Two systems are usually used: a brush or rotating machines. The former is obviously much cheaper, while the latter is certainly an investment, but it yields better results.
  • Elimination of fungi and moss It should be done weekly. In addition to removing dirt, which prevents its growth, if necessary, it's also a good idea to check for the appearance of fungi or moss. In any case, the saying "prevention is better than cure" applies, so a fungicide is always a great ally.
  • Adding sand It should be done after the previous three steps. If you notice a reduction in the amount of sand, for example due to wind or player movement, you'll obviously need to add more sand. This step can also be repeated week after week.
