In this article we will look at the regulatory height required for an outdoor and indoor padel court and the regulations for the illumination – which not everyone knows can directly impact the height of the pitch.

Outdoor padel court height

Before discussing the height of a padel court's walls, it's important to understand how the court itself is constructed. As we can see in the image above, the side walls of a padel court are composed of two distinct parts:

  • la real wall – made of opaque materials or glass;
  • la wire mesh fence.

The height of the the walls must be of 3 m while that of the fence di 4 metres. Regarding the configuration of the mix between metal mesh and opaque part, we leave you below some examples of the two styles that are identified as European e AmericanoIn any case, the construction company will be responsible, within the limits of the regulations, for creating the configuration that best suits the needs of the sports center. Consider, for example, areas exposed to lateral or diagonal winds, which can influence the choice between different structures.

Outdoors the advantage is that there is no upper limit, but indoors?

Indoor or covered padel court height

The following rule applies not only to fully indoor but also for those covered: this is why it's important to know this even when you rely on a company that makes padel court covers!

The height of the cover in indoor fields must be at least 7 meters from pitch level, across the entire width of the pitch!

While it's essential to pay attention to this rule for roofing, it's even more important when building warehouses, given the investment involved. It's best to avoid saving a few thousand euros only to end up with a field. not usable for official competitions.

Plus – The space on the edge of the pitch

We've just emphasized how crucial it is for the pitch to meet the required height to be considered regulation. Along with many other parameters we mentioned in our article, Padel court dimensions and materials there is however at least one other aspect to consider, which many are not aware of: the need for space on the edge of the pitch beyond the playing walls.

In order to host international competitions the field must have a space outside the cage 2 meters wide by 8 meters long (4 for each half of the court). This too is effectively considered a "playing space" – there are professionals who even go beyond the limits of the cage to recover shots!

So pay attention to this element too.

Lighting: Pay attention to the regulations regarding the height of padel courts.

Building a padel court is anything but simple: it's a sport where everything is regulated down to the last detail! on lighting provides for the presence of 4 steel poles, 6 metres high, each with 8 LED spotlights. LEDs must be categorically between 100 and 200 W. Illumination should normally be 400-500 lux, while for television broadcasts it should be 1000 lux. For the EU, lighting must comply with the EN 12193 “Lighting of sports facilities” regulation.

Attention: the minimum distance from the playing surface of the lower part of the headlights must be at least 6 metresThe aim is in fact not to cause vision difficulties for players and referees.
