Wooden geodesic dome: why it's (maybe) not the right one

In recent years, even in Italy, wooden geodesic domes have become popular , but are they really a safe investment? Wood, bamboo, and glass are extremely delicate materials that aren't always suitable—or cost-effective—for building geodesic domes for private or public use. Let's explore the main differences between a wooden and an aluminum geodesic dome, as well as the best construction solutions.

The Story: Fuller's Geodesic Dome

At the end of World War II, American architect, engineer, and philosopher R. Buckminster Fuller's goal was clear: to mass-produce housing in the shortest possible time , without costly planning or a wealth of materials. After extensive research, he arrived at the design of a hemispherical structure he called a "geodesic dome," with several unique features.

  • It was a self-supporting structure: it did not require internal columns and could withstand significant wind and snow loads without collapsing.
  • It was a extremely spacious structure for the area occupied: thanks to the absence of columns and dividing walls – except those wanted by the owners themselves – it offered the impression of infinite space.
  • It could have been exploited in height: in the central part, the greater height could offer space for mezzanines.

Wooden geodesic domes: the problem of humidity

Fuller chose aluminum because he knew it best combined the strength of a metal alloy with its light weight . Fiberglass, lighter than glass but still solid, was the perfect complement to a revolutionary structure for which he was granted a patent in 1954.

Wood is also a lightweight material , making it perfect for the dome's internal structure. But is it equally durable? Perhaps not, especially considering how the structure is constantly exposed to atmospheric winds.

Depending on the design, the beam structure could be exposed – external – or covered by the PVC sheeting that often covers these domes.

The biggest problem with wood, as we know, is exposure to humidity : both internally and externally. As in all dome structures—we discussed this in the very different case of the pressostatic balloon in this article —even in geodesic structures, warm, humid air tends to rise, creating condensation precisely at the highest point. While this disadvantage can be mitigated with measures such as dehumidification and good ventilation of the structure, in the case of a dome with wooden beams it could become a safety issue!

Over time, the wooden beams, if not properly maintained, could rot , and this would undermine not only the healthiness of the environment but also the stability of the dome itself.

If you choose a wooden dome, you will have to worry much more about humidity and its possible negative effects on your structure.
